Single Mother of Nine Children Sentence to Death
A single mother of nine children has been given the death sentence.
The woman, identified as Hairun Jalmanl was convicted for drug possession and distribution charges.
Jalmanl was sentenced to death in Tawa High Court in Sabah after she was caught with 113.9g of meth in 2018.
A video of the accused crying and begging for forgiveness while being led away by officers has being making the rounds on social media and has led to different reactions from various people.
After the emergence of the video, Amnesty International Malaysia has condemned the treatment of women in South-East Asia countries, asking that the death sentence be abolished. They also stated that the accused had life troubles on her shoulder as she was a single mother of nine children in a poor country.
They said: “Hairun’s life chances were stacked against her. She was a single mother in Malaysia’s poorest state trying to support 9 children. Her case is an example of how Malaysia’s death penalty punishes the poor w/ particular discriminations against women.
“Why is the right to life so easily denied by the govt? Who is kept safe when a single mother of nine is sentenced to death and removed from her children? What justice is served when the structural inequalities and oppressions that created the conditions for her charge remain?”
