Outrage as Dickson signs bill for Bayelsa lawmakers’ life pension A crisis is brewing in Bayelsa State over a bill passed by the House of Assembly approving life pension for all past and current members of the legislature. It was learnt that stakeholders in the state, including civil society organisations and political parties are preparing to protest. The House of Assembly had triggered anger last Wednesday when it hurriedly passed the bill sponsored by the Leader of the House, Peter Akpe. The bill approved N500, 000 post-service monthly pension to a speaker of the assembly, while a deputy speaker will receive N200, 000 and a member N100, 000 . The swift passage of the bill by the lawmakers without conducting any public hearing angered most indigenes, who accused Governor Seriake Dickson of being the person behind the bill. PHOTO: Pakistan Defence The Nigerian Navy (NN) says the Chief of Naval Staff, Pakistan Navy, Admiral Zafar Abbasi, will pay a two-day official visit to Nigeria from April 29 to May 1. Navy spokesman, Commodore Suleman Dahun, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. Dahun said the visit was in line with the ongoing efforts to foster cooperation with navies of allied countries, especially in the areas of capacity building and mutual cooperation between the Pakistan Navy and the Nigerian Navy. He said during the visit, Abbasi would hold bilateral discussions with the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas. He said that Abbasi would also visit the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, as well as the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin. “Thereafter, Abbasi will proceed to Lagos to visit NNS QUORRA, Western Naval Command and Naval Dockyard Limited,” the spokesman said.

Another Nigerian Shot Dead In South Africa The Nigerians Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), has reported the killing of another Nigerian, Mr Tony Elochukwu from Nnobi Anambra State by an unidentified gunman in South Africa. The President of NICASA, Prince Ben Okoli, said this in a letter sent to the Consular General, Nigerian Consulate in Johanesburg. Three Nigerians had been killed between April 6 and April 9, at different locations in the country. In the letter, obtained by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday, Okoli decried the death and continued killings of Nigerians in South Africa. “We received yet again the sad news of the death of another Nigerian in Witbank Mpumalanga province. “Mr Tony Elochukwu from Nnobi Anambra State was shot twice in the head by an unidentified Nigerian gunman on April 24 at around 2:45pm,” he said. World Malaria Day: Nigeria Accounts For 25% Of Global Malaria Burden – Adewo ABUJA –  Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health, yesterday revealed that malaria is still a public health challenge in Nigeria, adding that the country still accounts for 25% of the global malaria burden. He also said that the nation accounts for 19% of deaths from malaria. Ibori Moves To Quash Graft Conviction At European Court Chief James Onanefe Ibori, former governor of Delta State, has taken the United Kingdom to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, in a bid to quash his conviction by a London court. The former governor, who lost an appeal against his conviction in London, had pleaded guilty in a London court in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering involving sums amounting to at least 50 million pounds ($66 million). He received a 13-year jail sentence of which he served half. $2.1bn Malabu Oil Scam: Court Orders Arrest Of Etete , Adoke , Others Abuja –  A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Jabi, on Wednesday, ordered the arrest of Dan Etete, a former Minister of Petroleum, and Mohammed Adoke, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, for their alleged involvement in the Malabu Oil scandal. Also affected by the order were Raph Wetzels, Casula Roberto, Pujato Stefeno, and Burrato Sebastiano. The court presided by Justice Danlami Z. Senchi gave the order following an ex parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a warrant of arrest against the aforementioned persons. Delta Chief Judge Frees 38 Inmates Awaiting Trial ASABA –  Thirty-eight inmates awaiting trial at the Ogwashi-Uku Prison, Aniocha South Local Government of Delta State have regained their freedom. Their freedom came through the visit of the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Marshall Umukoro, during his ongoing prison visit across the state. Reviewing 835 cases at the prison, he decried the high rate of crime among youths in the state. According to Umukoro, “I am pained that these youths are in custody, our responsibility is to assist them realize their potential outside prison”. NLC cautions FG against IMF’s petroleum subsidy removal The Nigerian Labour Congress ( NLC ) has cautioned the Federal Government against implementing the recommendation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the removal of subsidy on petroleum products in the country.
