Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, has raised an alarm over continuous leaking roof in the National Assembly chamber, stressing that anomaly has become dangerous to lawmakers’ safety.
reports that leaks from the roof of the national assembly building whenever it rains had before now disrupted plenary session.
Wednesday’s episode, which followed a downpour, occurred at the ‘White House’ section of the National Assembly complex which houses both upper and lower legislative chambers.
Many lawmakers were reportedly stranded for some minutes before the rain subsided as the lobby of the Assembly became impassable. Cleaners were immediately mobilised to clear the pool of water.
Elumelu, while expressing concern in a point of order raised during the day’s plenary, drew the attention of his colleagues to the danger inherent in coming to plenary to make laws under a leaking roof.
According to him, ”Our chamber is leaking. While coming into the chamber this morning, we noticed the cleaners making frantic effort to scoop the water.
” This is dangerous to our day to day lawmaking, we cannot be representing our people and speaking for them under a leaking roof.”
In his ruling on the matter, the Speaker of the House of Reps, Femi Gbajabiamila, stated that Elumelu’s point of order was noted, adding that, “this is very important to us”.
