A former Chairman of Patani Local Government Area and Ex-Commissioner for Agriculture and Water Resources, Hon. Omoun Perekebena, has formally declared his intention to contest the Patani Constituency seat in the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Perekebena made his declaration during a visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Patani, where he unveiled his ambition under the “Renewed Hope for More” agenda.
The declaration attracted a large turnout of supporters and admirers, who reportedly gathered voluntarily in what observers described as a demonstration of his grassroots acceptance and political strength.
He was received by APC ward and local government executives led by the party chairman, Mr. Julius Oruma, popularly known as Zakato, alongside the incumbent Chairman of Patani LGA, Hon. Isaac Aguana.
Speaking during the event, Oruma welcomed the aspirant and assured all party hopefuls of a level playing field, stressing the party’s commitment to internal democracy and fairness in the selection process.
In his address, Perekebena expressed appreciation to party leaders and stakeholders for their support during his tenure as council chairman and commissioner. He said his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to reposition representation in the constituency.
According to him, Patani deserves a vibrant and experienced voice in the state legislature, noting that ineffective representation has created a disconnect between elected officials and the people.
“The era of lukewarm and ineffective representation is over. I am coming with experience, capacity, and a clear understanding of legislative responsibilities to give our people a stronger voice in the Delta State House of Assembly,” he said.
Perekebena highlighted his background as a former senior legislative aide and a trained lawyer, adding that he possesses the competence to sponsor impactful bills and contribute meaningfully to debates on issues affecting the constituency.
He also emphasized the core duties of a legislator, including lawmaking and oversight, noting that effective collaboration with government agencies and the executive arm would be key to attracting development projects to Patani.
“Our people deserve a representative who is accessible and responsive. There is currently a wide gap between the electorate and their representative, and that must change,” he added.
Reflecting on his time as council chairman, Perekebena recalled his grassroots engagement style, stating that he maintained close contact with residents and prioritized transparency in governance.
“I walked freely among the people, shared their daily experiences, and ensured that public funds were used for their benefit. Within three years, we successfully executed 66 projects across all wards in Patani,” he said.
He further pledged to replicate such people-oriented leadership if elected into the state assembly.
A stakeholder who spoke on condition of anonymity described Perekebena as a capable and results-driven leader, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver quality representation and bring democratic dividends to the constituency.
The 2027 Delta State House of Assembly elections are expected to witness increased political activity in Patani Constituency, as aspirants position themselves for party nominations and eventual contests.
