Ijaw Development: Group Launches Movement to Engage Key Stakeholders in Delta

A new socio-political advocacy group, the Ijaw Political Grassroots Development Movement (IPGDM), has been launched with a mandate to drive constructive engagement with critical stakeholders and address the persistent underdevelopment in Ijaw communities across Delta State.

The convener and chairman of the movement, Chief Mulade Sheriff, PhD, described IPGDM as a strategic pressure group committed to amplifying the concerns of the Ijaw people and influencing policies that promote equitable development.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at drawing urgent attention from government at all levels, as well as relevant institutions, to the infrastructural and socio-economic challenges facing Ijaw communities despite their significant contributions to the state and national economy.
“It is a known fact that Ijaw communities continue to lack basic developmental amenities, notwithstanding our enormous economic contributions to the growth and development of Delta State and Nigeria at large,” he stated.
Chief Sheriff emphasized that the movement is poised to champion a new direction through sustained advocacy, dialogue, and collaboration with stakeholders.
“We are taking up the responsibility to advocate for a shift from the prevailing narrative of neglect to one of inclusive and sustainable development in Ijaw communities,” he said.
He further called on Ijaw sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora, to rally behind the initiative, stressing that collective effort is essential to achieving meaningful progress.
“We humbly solicit the support and understanding of all well-meaning Ijaw indigenes to join this movement for constructive engagement. Together, we can drive the process of dialogue and ensure lasting developmental progress for our communities,” he added.
The launch of IPGDM comes amid growing calls for balanced development in oil-producing regions, with stakeholders increasingly advocating for improved infrastructure, social services, and fair distribution of resources.
