FCT Council Speaker, Aide Die In Highway Accident


The Speaker of the Gwagwalada Area Council legislative arm, Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, and his aide, Ibrahim Ibwa, have died in a fatal motor accident at Sheda village along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The accident occurred around 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, involving a Mercedes-Benz car and a Sino truck.

The Speaker’s aide died on the spot, while Ibwa died in the early hours of Thursday at the Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he had been referred after initially receiving treatment at Legend Hospital in Gwagwalada.

 A source said the Speaker was travelling in the Mercedes-Benz with two other persons when the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with the truck near Sheda village.

According to the source, the third occupant of the vehicle survived the crash and is currently receiving medical attention.

The source added that the Speaker and his aides were returning to Gwagwalada from Kwali, where they had attended a political meeting, when the accident occurred.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the crash.

The official said one victim died at the scene, while two others, including the Speaker, were rescued and taken to the hospital.

He said the corpse of the deceased was deposited at the Legend Hospital mortuary in Gwagwalada.

The remains of the late Speaker were later buried according to Islamic rites in his Ibwa community in the Gwagwalada Area Council.

The incident has thrown the council and the deceased’s community into mourning.

Breaking: ASUU suspends 2-week warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has suspended its two-week warning strike it declared last week across all public universities in the country. The union announced the suspension on Wednesday at a press conference held at its headquarters in Abuja. President of ASUU, Chris Piwuna, who read a prepared speech before newsmen, explained that the development followed intervention by the Senate and some other well-meaning Nigerians.
