PDP Accuses Okpebholo Of Wasting Edo Resources On Political Jamborees

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come down hard on Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of turning the state into a “theatre of political jamborees” while allegedly neglecting core responsibilities in governance.

In a statement issued Friday, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Edo, Chris Osa Nehikhare, described the governor’s recent political gatherings as reckless, self-serving and devoid of any meaningful benefit to the people.

The opposition party said it was appalling, disappointing and most irrational that Okpebholo, who it claims has been junketing across the country in search of loans, is now allegedly spending billions of naira in public funds to host political events.

“Barely days after squandering billions of scarce public funds to host APC governors in Benin City, Okpebholo is set to waste even more taxpayers’ money on another hollow gathering, the so-called South-South Summit,” Nehikhare said.

He added that these events are happening while Edo’s health, education, and infrastructure sectors are in a “state of abandonment,” and the governor has failed to implement any “visible projects or people-focused programmes.”

FocalPoint reported that the PDP further alleged that governance has taken a back seat under Okpebholo’s administration.

“This is not only reckless and condemnable, but an affirmation that Okpebholo is a politician completely out of his depth,” the statement read.

“How can a governor begging for loans to stay afloat justify back-to-back carnivals with no value to the people except to promote his selfish interests?”

The party claimed that the motivation behind the governor’s recent flurry of political activity is to influence the impending Supreme Court judgment over the controversial 2024 gubernatorial election, which the PDP has continued to challenge.

“These jamborees are a calculated ploy to curry favour with President Bola Tinubu and paint a false image of popularity ahead of the Supreme Court ruling,” Nehikhare alleged.

“Okpebholo and his cronies are staging these shows to blackmail the President and judiciary, parading themselves as presidential allies in hopes of manipulating the judicial outcome.”

The PDP also repeated its claim that Okpebholo “came into office through the backdoor,” alleging that his emergence was the product of “one of the most fraudulent and manipulated elections in recent Nigerian history.”

While expressing confidence in the impartiality of the judiciary and President Tinubu’s integrity, the PDP urged the governor to shift his attention from “politics of deception” and deliver on his mandate to the people.

“The people of Edo are watching. They are not fooled by rented crowds or sponsored praise-singing. What they demand is good governance, not theatrics,” the PDP said.
