NDLEA Captures Suspected Drug Traffickers, Destroy Hectares of Hard Drug Farm in Edo


The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo Command on Thursday, said it arrested 20 suspects in connection with illicit drug trafficking.

Mr Buba Wakawa, State Commander of the agency disclosed this in an interview with the reporters in Benin.

Wakawa said the suspects who were arrested in October included 18 males and two females.

He also told the reporters that suspected cannabis sativa farms measuring approximately 6.9 hectares were destroyed by the command within the period.

Wakawa also disclosed that illicit drugs seized from the suspects included 2,390.854 kilograms of suspected cannabis sativa, as well as psychotropic substance.

He further revealed that the command also secured 11 convictions within the same period, while 32 cases were still pending in court.

He added that the command also counseled 13 drug users comprising of nine males and four females.

Recall that Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), had called for removal of the clause that allows the option of fine for drug offenders from the agency’s Act, saying the move will strengthen war against illicit drugs.


In his statement, Marwa said that he believed the removal of the clause, which allows judges use discretionary powers to give options of fine, would solve the jigsaw.
