NOSDRA NOT EQUIP TO DETECT, RESPOND TO OIL SPILL IN NIGERIA, THE AGENCY IS POWERLESS, STARVED, COMATOSE.....SENIOR STAFF LAMENTS

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA has been reported incompetent, comatose and non functional as  staff of the agency alleged that NOSDRA is not equipped to detect and respond to oil spill in Nigeria.

The staff who pleaded anonymity disclosed to FocalPoint Reports on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, River state, disclosed that the agency lack the resources to monitor and detect oil spill, adding that the agency depends on the oil companies to report themselves to NOSDRA when ever there is oil spill resulting from their  operational errors.

He noted that since the establishment of the agency by the Federal government, the staff of the agency are poorly paid under ministry of environment. He affirm that the laws establishing NOSDRA as an agency does not portend any future benefit to those suffering from the disastrous effect of oil spill in the country".

 "The agency is constrained, not empowered to detection, and response to oil spillages in Nigeria. With the heead office at Abuja and zonal offices in Lagos, Akure, Porth-court, Warri, Kaduna, Uyo, Kogi, Gombe and Bayelsa t does not give the agency needed flexibility to detect spillages on their own it would have been better if the head office is was situated in the Niger Delta".

 "NOSDRA cannot ensure enforce compliance with environmental legislation in the Nigeria Petroleum Sector as most spills particularly in the Niger Delta third party related".

"The Agency does not have the resources to embarks on Investigation and ensure  remediation of impacted sites,  oil spill drill exercise and facility inspection".

Retired police officers protest over unpaid pensions

Some retired police officers under the contributory pension scheme on Tuesday, May 21, protested at the National Assembly over alleged several months of unpaid pensions with a call on President Bola Tinubu to remove them from the scheme. The protesters decried the extreme challenges they endure, saying that the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) has failed to pay their entitlements for several months causing them and their families untold hardship. The aggrieved retired police officers also wrote a Save Our Soul (SOS) letter to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, calling for an urgent intervention.
