INEC Picks November 16 For Kogi, Bayelsa Governorship Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (lNEC) has picked November 16 as new date for the conduct of governorship election in Kogi and Baylesa States, respectively.

According to a statement signed by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education, the initial date of November 2 was shelved following the appeal made to the Commission on Tuesday by stakeholders from Baylesa State.

Our findings revealed that Bayelsa State indigenes on Tuesday stormed the national headquarter of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).

Led by the State Deputy governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha Jonah (rtd) they demanded for shift in the initial date fixed for the governorship election in the state by the electoral umpire.

INEC had picked November 2, 2019 for the conduct of the election. But the stakeholders said the date coincided with the day for their yearly thanksgiving service.

The Bayelsa State deputy governor appealed to the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu who received the delegation to consider any other day other than November 2 to enable the indigenes of the state celebrate their spiritual day, as he noted that conducting the election on the same day of the Thanksgiving would mar the turnout of voters for the poll.

Okoye in the statement further disclosed that, “after a careful consideration of the appeals. The Commission at its regular weekly meeting held today Thursday 16th May decided to shift the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States to Saturday 16th November 2019.”

The timelines for all other activities leading to the elections have also been adjusted to align with the new date.”

According to the amended timetable and schedule of activities for the elections, notice of election and commencement of campaigns have been fixed for August 17 and 18, respectively.

Woman Burned to Death, Accused of Kidnapping 7yrs Old Boy in Delta
