NGO PIND Foundation, Champions Peace Meeting as Ijaw, Itsekiri Meet in Delta State
A Nigerian Non governmental organisation, Partnership Initiative in the Niger  Delta, PIND Foundation, on Wednesday held a town hall meeting for Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups at Ogbe-Ijoh, the Local Government headquarters of Warri South-West, Delta State.

 The  network coordinator, Partner For Peace in the Niger Delta, High, Chief Africas Lawal who spoke during the meeting, urged the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities under the Warri Multi Stake Holders Platform (MSP) to appreciate their common traits. The gathering was attended by Ijaw, Itsekiri Leaders, local government Chairman, traditional rulers and security agencies who presented salient points on the importance of peaceful coexistence.

For the second time, leaders of the two ethnic groups are meeting and brainstorming under the Warri Multi Stakeholders Platform, MSP, for Peaceful coexistence, the first meeting was held in Koko, Warri North Local government area. From the town hall meetings, traits common to Ijaw and Itsekiri such as mode of dressing, similar masquerades, polygamy, names, even traditional ethnic values were explored and appreciated

Both ethnic groups were brainstormed on how to achieve sustainable development, Itsekiri leaders and a representative of the Olu of Warri, Chief Clement Maleghemi noted that politicising peace is dangerous to development. Ijaw Leader and a representative of the the Pere (King) of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oboro Gbarauran the second, Chief Isaiah Ukulor also backed the call for peaceful coexistence between Ijaw's and Itsekiri's

 A keynote speaker, Dr. Austin Onuoha also stated that one of the cardinal ingredients of a peaceful society is the ability to resolve issues affecting their communities. An Itsekiri leader, Dr. Jeffrey Wilkie, also noted that the town hall meeting should be marked as a day for both ethnic groups to have a rethink for peace and urges parent to preach the message of peace to their children.

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO Ogbe-Ijaw Division, SP Nmor Ifeanyi who also spoke at the meeting noted that the root course of any crisis is social injustice.

Retired police officers protest over unpaid pensions

Some retired police officers under the contributory pension scheme on Tuesday, May 21, protested at the National Assembly over alleged several months of unpaid pensions with a call on President Bola Tinubu to remove them from the scheme. The protesters decried the extreme challenges they endure, saying that the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) has failed to pay their entitlements for several months causing them and their families untold hardship.
