Okomu Oil Partners Govt, NGOs On Small Holders Palm Production

Benin – The Managing Director, Okomu Oil Palm Company, Dr. Graham Hefer, said the company was partnering with the Edo State Government and Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) on small holders palm production in which the host communities would be the major beneficiary.

Hefer, who lamented the increase in the theft of the company’s products in recent time, also disclosed that the organisation had expended at least N20 million on whistle blower between last year and the first quarter of 2019.

Hefer made the disclosure while speaking at a training workshop for the host communities and staff of the oil palm company said theft of the company’s products was on the increase in recent time, pointing out that the only way to nip the unwholesome incident in the bud was through the encouragement of whistle blower, which he said was yielding positive results.

While regretting the rate at which people were now resorting to stealing the company’s products, Hefer said he hoped that things would get better as they go through the year.

He, however, revealed that the Nigeria Institute For Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) had already approached some of the communities about the scheme, just as he emphasised the importance of communication between the company and the host communities.

“Our conferences and discussions with the communities have been all about communication. Basically, the company has a very good relationship with the host communities and we want to make sure that our host communities and ourselves understand each other. We should not resort to violence in any way but talking to each other on any issues” Hefer said.
