Delta Chief Judge Frees 38 Inmates Awaiting Trial
ASABA – Thirty-eight inmates awaiting trial at the Ogwashi-Uku Prison, Aniocha South Local Government of Delta State have regained their freedom.
Their freedom came through the visit of the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Marshall Umukoro, during his ongoing prison visit across the state.
Reviewing 835 cases at the prison, he decried the high rate of crime among youths in the state.
According to Umukoro, “I am pained that these youths are in custody, our responsibility is to assist them realize their potential outside prison”.
He advised those released to shun any form of violence or criminal act, urging them to engage in meaningful ventures.
He urged prison officials, lawyers to be alive to their responsibilities to deliver justice, just as he implored them to double their effort to help decongest the prison.
It is recorded that a total of 150 inmates have been so far released, 11 granted bail while 1,144 have been reviewed by Justice Umukoro at the prisons visited.
