By Sunday Apah

Mayor Hollies J. Winston of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and his wife, Latrice Winston, paid a visit on Tuesday to Hon. Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode, the Chairman of Udu Local Government Council in Delta State, Nigeria.

The purpose of their meeting was to explore opportunities for collaboration on development initiatives that would benefit both Brooklyn Park and Udu.

During their discussions at the Udu Local Government Council Secretariat, Mayor Winston emphasized the multicultural character of Brooklyn Park, which hosts a substantial Nigerian community along with residents from other West African nations.

He pointed out the presence of several Fortune 500 enterprises in Brooklyn Park, such as Cargill, General Mills, and Medtronic, and underscored the significance of establishing cooperative efforts between the two municipalities.

Chairman Oyibode voiced his support for joint projects that would be advantageous for both Brooklyn Park and Udu.

In response, Mayor Winston assured him that sharing insights and ideas would be integral to strengthening relations between their communities.

He also expressed appreciation to the members of Reconnecting the Great Diaspora (RGD) for facilitating this partnership and noted that there is great potential for growth in their collaboration.

During the visit, Chairman Oyibode guided Mayor Winston on a tour of a facility named in honor of Brooklyn Park, along with other ongoing construction developments in the region.

Furthermore, Mayor Winston and his entourage made their way to Asaba, the capital of Delta State, for a meeting with Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

The Governor, represented by his Chief Adviser, Senator Ighoyota Amori, PhD., expressed gratitude toward Mayor Winston for his efforts in strengthening the relationship between Udu Local Government Council and Brooklyn Park.
He assured the Mayor that he would keep the Governor informed of their discussions and that measures would be taken to foster collaboration.

As part of their Nigerian itinerary, the Mayor and his delegation continued to Badagry, Lagos State, where they visited significant historical sites related to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, including the "Point of No Return."

The display of relics such as slave trade shackles and various artifacts provided a somber reflection on the history of the slave trade.

Accompanying Mayor Winston and his wife were members of the Reconnecting the Great Diaspora (RGD), including Chief Godfrey Edaferierhi, Chief Aruworay Memene, Chief Ochuko Okitikpi, and Hon. Jite Brown, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Government Affairs.
