CHRPC, IDU, Civil Society Takes Action Against Torture of 98-yr-old Woman in Delta

Human Rights group, Center for Human Rights and Public Complaints, CHRPC, Isoko Development Union (IDU) and coalition of Niger Delta Civil society has taken action against the torture of 98 years old women in Otor-Iyede, Delta State.

CHRPC had writen a petition on the 24th April, 2021 to the Nigeria police Delta state, Ozoro Area command demanding the arrest of those involved in the torturing of 98 years old Mama Magarret Okpole who was accused of witchcraft.

CHRPC  was joined by a members of  Niger Delta civil society coalition, Comrade Amaechi Ogbonna in a follow-up visit to the family of the victim at Ozoro where they were invited to make statements at the police station, Wednesday April 28, 2021. The Area commander Ozoro was commended for being proactive.


The immediate past president of the Isoko Development Union (IDU) Chief (Hon) Iduh Amadhe has condemned the brutal torturing of 98 years old woman, Margaret Okole on the accusation of witchcraft in Otor-Iyede, Isoke North local government area, Delta State.


Speaking with Newsmen on Wednesday in Ozoro, Isoko North LGA, Chief Iduh noted that violence against the elderly is not  acceptable in Isoko lands.

Chief Amadhe said, "We are disgusted by this unspeakable act, those who carried out those actions must be brought to book".


It was learnt that the incident happened on Friday, March 19, leaving the nonagenarian in untold shock and pains.

However, findings from the oracle reportedly proved that the 98-year old was innocent of witchcraft.

Daughter of the 98-year old victim, Mrs Alice Jete, while appealing to the Delta State Commissioner of Police Mr. Ari Muhammed Ali and human rights organisations to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book, also debunked the allegation, saying that her mother was falsely accused and maltreated. 

She also appeal for financial support to care for the medical bills of the 98 years mother who was again taken to Hospital at Olomoro for medical attention.

Retired police officers protest over unpaid pensions

Some retired police officers under the contributory pension scheme on Tuesday, May 21, protested at the National Assembly over alleged several months of unpaid pensions with a call on President Bola Tinubu to remove them from the scheme.
