The Nigerian Army has been assured of Delta State’s commitment to fully utilise its allocated quota in the ongoing 91 Regular Recruits Intake (RRI), which commenced on March 30.
The state governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, gave the assurance on Thursday while receiving a recruitment sensitisation team from Army Headquarters in Asaba, led by Brigadier General Moses Ikoba.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, the governor emphasised that the state government remained proactive in mobilising eligible youths to participate in the exercise.
He noted that Delta had constituted a dedicated committee tasked with sensitising young people across the state on the benefits and opportunities available in the military, paramilitary, and other security agencies.
He further disclosed that the government is actively engaging traditional rulers, local government council chairmen, and youth groups to boost awareness and encourage enlistment. According to him, lessons learned from previous recruitment exercises are being applied to address existing gaps and improve participation.
Governor Oborevwori also directed the State Awareness Creation Committee on Youth Enlistment, alongside the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, to intensify media campaigns and grassroots sensitisation efforts across all 25 local government areas.
The goal, he said, is to ensure widespread awareness and increased turnout for the ongoing recruitment exercise and future enlistments, while thanking the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for sending the Army sensitisation team to Delta State.
Earlier, Brigadier General Ikoba explained that the delegation’s visit was to underscore the importance of the recruitment exercise and to seek the state government’s support in achieving its quota.
He disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff had called for more aggressive and result-oriented sensitisation strategies nationwide to boost enlistment figures.
Ikoba urged eligible youths in the state to apply for the 91 RRI online, free of charge at https://recruitment.army.mil.ng, emphasising the opportunities available for recruits to continue their education up to higher levels while serving in the Nigerian Army.
The army officer commended Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to maintaining peace and security in Delta State, noting that the administration’s efforts align with its broader development agenda.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a souvenir to the governor in recognition of his contributions to peacebuilding and national security.
Brigadier General Ikoba and his team later paid courtesy visits to traditional rulers of neighbouring Okpanam and Ibusa communities to engage local youths on the benefits of joining the Nigerian Army.
Members of the Delta State Awareness Creation Committee on Youth Enlistment into Military and Paramilitary Services present at the meeting included the Director-General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr (Barr) Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe; the Committee Secretary and Secretary to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, Chief Alfred Origbo; and the Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Political and Security Services (DPSS), Mr Theophilus Chuks Aguonye.
Also in attendance were the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Milton Sagboje Odiri; the Permanent Secretary, SSG’s Office, Mr Tony Abua; Executive Assistants to the Governor in the SSG’s Office, Mr Josy Honnah and Mr J.C. Morka, among other senior government officials.
