A tragic attack has thrown residents of Tor-Damisa community in Donga Local Government Area in Taraba State into mourning after gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen stormed the area on Wednesday evening, killing at least seven persons.
According to reports, the armed assailants invaded the community, shooting sporadically and causing widespread panic among residents.
The attackers were, however, confronted by officers of the Taraba State Police Command, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Sources, according to the Daily post, disclosed that the confrontation turned deadly, with casualties recorded on both sides.
It was gathered that three police officers and four civilians were gruesomely killed during the attack.
Focalpoint reports that the identities of the victims had yet to be officially released as of the time of filing this report.
The violence triggered fear and confusion across the community, forcing several residents to flee to neighbouring areas in search of safety.
Eyewitnesses described the situation as chaotic, with many families abandoning their homes amid the sound of gunshots.
However, no official statement has yet been issued by the police command as of the time of filing this report.
In other news, fifteen people were reported dead, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries when bandits attacked Farun Bala, Falale, and Kadobe villages in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State on Tuesday.
A senior local government official in Jibia, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attack was triggered by an earlier confrontation between local vigilantes and repentant bandits.
According to the official, as reported by Daily Trust, the suspected bandits were reportedly moving through the area with cattle believed to have been stolen when they were intercepted by local security operatives.
He explained that during the confrontation that followed, three of the suspects were allegedly killed.
He added that after the killing of the three bandits, armed men regrouped and returned to Kadobe, Farun Bala, and Falale in large numbers, unleashing terror on the residents.
“What happened was unfortunate. This was an area that had started enjoying peace after long negotiations. But the actions of some local security operatives may have ignited this fresh violence.
“What followed was a wave of terror, gunshots, screams, and chaos. By the time the dust settled, at least 15 lives had been lost,” he said.
