Olu of Warri, Foundations Embark on Free Eye Surgeries in Delta  (News Photos)

Over 500 persons in Delta State have benefited from the  free cataract surgeries and treatments sponsored by the  Olu of Warri, Atuwatse III.

The one week free Surgeries benefited patients with cataract   irrespective of their tribes and state of origin, they trooped to Agbowu medical center, Ekurede itsekiri, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State to access and benefit from the programme.

The surgeries were carried out by Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation, GB Foods, Elenna-Barraqer foundation among other foreign medical professionals who recieved hundreds of patients for the surgeries.

An ophthalmologist and founder of Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation, Dr. Mejuya Okorodudu, disclosed that His Majesty Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, The Olu of Warri, recommended that the free cataract surgeries in warri should cut across all Nigerians around the three Local Government Areas in Warri South, South West, North and Burutu Local Government Areas.

Addressing newsmen he said that, "So, for this we are doing five hundred (500) Cataract free surgery. For all Nigerians. Though, we are doing it as partnership here. The major partner is between Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation. Elena Barraquer Foundation. The Olu of Warri has match the number of cataract with Elena Baraquer Foundation is offering to Nigeria.

"Elena Baraquer has offered us two hundred and fifty (250) free cataract (Feco surgery), so when i went to see the Olu of Warri, introducing the project and I asked that he also match their cataract so he has agreed. And we are doing 500 Cataract Free surgery.

"I must  mention here that, immediately I told the Olu, about what we needed to do, he insisted that all persons, all Nigerians must have all access to the surgery and he directed that i must write letter to our neighbors around, invite them to send their citizens to come and patake in this. So, I wrote letters to the Oroje of Okpe and the Ovie of Uvwie".

"We are hoping that the Spanish partners, Elena-Barraquer Foundation are only here for a couple of days, but in the four days that they are going to be with us, The surgeon will carryout forty surgery daily"

"This is project we always carry on, we have our mobile cataract service, we are not surgeon that stays in our offices and wait for people to come, we take our practice to them, We have a mobile cataract surgery van, We take around and we are always in the rivers, working among the people of the rivers,

"I have taggeted my work, to be working inside the rivers because Am one of the people from the rivers, am an Itsekiri man, so I don't go into the river, nobody go, and nobody will go. So it makes sense for me to take my training, and go and put it to the disposal of my people. Which means all the people of the rivers"

"And also I cannot end but thank also my King, Ogiame, the Olu of Warri. who whole heartedly embrace and support this project But what found most gratifying was his instructions that, everybody around us here should benefits from this.

"Because, like he said, blindness dose not know a tribe, once you are blind, you are blind. So if you say you don't want other people to come, then you will be missing the point. Though, he was sponsoring more than fifty percent 50% of the work, and he made it up".

A beneficiary, Chief Mrs Kate Emetu expressed appreciation and thanked the Olu of Warri and the Foundations for helping her and others too numerous to mention regain their sights.
