CEPEJ SENSITIZES PEOPLE AT FCT, DELTA STATE TO MARK 2020 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

A renowned environment sustainability advocacy NGO in Nigeria known as the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ, with Head Office in Warri Delta State, and branch Offices in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, as well as Delta State Riverine, has joined the entire world to mark this year’s World Environment Day tagged “Biodiversity: Time for Nature,” from 1st to 5th June, 2020.

 

The Abuja Office of the NGO in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, FCT, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), National Orientation Agency (NOA), and GiveFood Nigeria, commemorated the world environment day at Byazhin Community in Bwari Local Government Area of the FCT.

The event featured the sensitization of residents on environmental management, tree planting, as well as the distribution of facemasks, hand sanitizers, and food palliatives to residents. 

A representative of the Deputy Director of Environment at the NOA, a representative of the Director, Environmental Monitoring at the AEPB, a representative of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety at the AEPB, as well as cabinet members of the Byazhin Ruling Council, actively participated in the event.

The Warri Head Office of CEPEJ, in collaboration with Chief Vincent Oyibode, representing Udu, Ughelli South and the Urhobo’s in Warri Area on the Board of DESOPADEC, marked this year's World Environment Day at Oghior, in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, on Friday June 5, 2020.

The CEPEJ Warri Team celebrated the day with  activities including public awareness campaign on biodiversity as a means of protecting and preserving the environment with concerns for local organisms, animals and plants; a sensitization campaign on preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19 in Delta State; planting of economic and shade trees in the community primary and secondary schools, the health centre and community entrance.

In his contributory effort towards curbing the spread of COVID-19 in Delta State, the National Coordinator of CEPEJ, Chief (Comrade) Sheriff Mulade, represented by the Warri Team, went round the community, sensitized the people on, and emphasized the importance of staying safe amid COVID -19 pandemic; distributed CEPEJ customized face masks, stickers and flyers as a reminder of the global event to curb the spread of COVID-19. 

Comrade Mulade then charged the community to be conscious of the environment and practice personal hygiene as a way to reduce the spread of the killer disease. He encouraged them to be nature-friendly through the protection of plants and animals in their community. 

Speaking in the native language at the occasion, Chief Vincent Oyibode, represented by his Personal Assistant, Mr. Kasoro Kelvin,  thanked the people, especially the community Exco, women and the elders for participating in the event,  noting that one way by which people can protect the environment is to protect themselves from contracting the COVID-19 disease. 

On the precautionary measures to stay safe, he urged the community people to wash their hands regularly with soap and running water, wear their face masks, and practise social and physical distancing to avoid the spread of the dreaded virus. Chief Oyibode thanked CEPEJ for marking this year's world environment day at Oghior community, first of its kind in that locality,    and charged the people to develop the culture of tree planting as a way of protecting the environment towards healthy living.

Those who joined in the campaign and supported the programme included members of the community advisory council, elders, youth and women leaders, children, President General of the community, Paul Okeme, Secretary General, Alfred Oghiagbephan, Advisory Council Chairman, Freeborn Ghaghara, Treasurer, Emmanuel Ogbodor, Financial Secretary, Monday Williky, and Assistant Secretary, E. Komoda, amongst others. They were very glad that CEPEJ chose Oghior Community as venue to mark the 2020 World Environment Day.

The World Environment Day was inaugurated in 1972 following the United Nations Conference held from the 5th to 16th of June in Stockholm, Sweden, on the need to protect and preserve the human environment. It is the largest annual global event for positive actions aimed at deepening public awareness on the need to protect, preserve and renew the global environment for human habitation.
