APC chief to Wike: channel N78.9bn refund to health, schools, others

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chukwuemeka Eze, has advised the state Governor, Nyesom Wike, to invest the N78.9bn refund from the Federal Government on health, education and payment of pensioners.

Eze clarified that President Muhammadu Buhari, approved the money as a refund for federal road projects embarked upon by the state government during the administration of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

The party chief and former National Publicity Secretary, defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (NPDP) in a statement in Port Harcourt, said former President Goodluck Jonathan refused to release the money to Amaechi because the former governor failed to accept the conditions for the refund.

“Jonathan asked Amaechi to work with him in 2015 and in return Amaechi will get this refund and he will give him the freedom to choose his successor but Amaechi refused which resulted to him been hoarded like an animal”, he said.

Eze heaped praises on Buhari saying refunding the money to Wike was a sincere and patriotic display of his commitment to grow the economies of states.

“This was the fund Amaechi sought for approval from the then administration of Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, a son of Niger Delta, but was denied through the influence of Nyesom Wike, to the detriment of Rivers people.

“We should also see this action as a demonstration by this administration of her commitment towards the rapid development of our dear State. I am convinced that within the next few months, President Muhammadu Buhari will consider alleviating our sufferings and appreciate us for the huge risk and humiliation we have suffered in enthroning his administration and so I plead with us all to be a bit more patient, as God will not allow our sufferings to continue unattended”.

But Eze asked Wike to reinvest the money into reviving the over 300 model primary health centres, 350 model state of the arts Primary schools and 24 international standard secondary schools built by Amaechi as well as most of the roads begging for attention in the state.

He said the governor should use part of the funds to pay pensioners their dues and to meet other workers’ obligations in the state.

He urged the governor to be mindful of the huge number of job losses in the state and think of generating employments by building factories, mills and industries.

Eze asked Wike and Jonathan to formally apologise to Amaechi for humiliating and abusing him despite his commitment to the best interest of Rivers people.

He appealed to members of the APC not to see Buhari’s gesture as a means of empowering their enemy but look at it as a process of vindicating Amaechi against allegations that he embezzled the state’s funds
