Amnesty Programme: Ex-militants urges Buhari to seek neutral, proven candidate for office



An ex-militant group, Niger Delta National Freedom Fighters, (NDNFF), Western Ijaw Division, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to seek a "neutral" candidate, with "proven" track record, to head the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

The group, under the auspices of Ateotaoo and led by Agbobulagha Ebube, urged the president to ignore candidates being fronted by politicians, in a statement made available to newsmen, Friday .

NDNFF also claimed a minister from the region, whose name it did not disclose, is fronting a candidate, Chief Dennis Otuaro, allegedly being sponsored by a former militant leader in Delta state, for the position.

 

Condemning the move, the group advised the minister to focus on his new assignment, rather than serve the interest of politically inclined militant groups in the creeks. 

Arguing that no militant group should project a candidate for the Amnesty office, the ex-agitators said such may cause tension in the volatile region. 

They further condemned the negative reports making the rounds about the current coordinator, Professor Charles Dokubo, opining that those against his leadership only want their loyalist in his stead.

Emphasizing that it has no preferred candidate, the group said, "there is more to be done to reap the success of the amnesty programme. 

"Our group ATEOTAOO has not benefited from the programme, yet we are calm and hopeful toward doing something positive. We have written to President Mohammadu Buhari to that regard and we have our acknowledged copy of letters. We remain patient because we know that the Amnesty programme needs a complete overhauling to undo its current complications.

"The Federal Government, President Mohammadu Buhari should call his ministers to order, and appoint someone with proven integrity, peaceful, reasonable and accessible. We are also calling for an end to any negative publicity against Professor Charles Quaker Dokubo till the President will deem it fit to relieve him from office.

Retired police officers protest over unpaid pensions

Some retired police officers under the contributory pension scheme on Tuesday, May 21, protested at the National Assembly over alleged several months of unpaid pensions with a call on President Bola Tinubu to remove them from the scheme.
