A Niger Delta-based civil society organisation, the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), has unveiled its 2026 Strategic Work Plan while intensifying advocacy against cultism and drug abuse in selected primary and secondary schools across the region.
The initiative follows the rising cases of homicide and social vices linked to drug abuse, particularly among young people.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday at the organisation’s headquarters in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, the National Coordinator of CEPEJ, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, said the school sensitisation campaign was designed to raise awareness among pupils and students on the dangers of drug abuse, cultism and other social vices.
Mulade explained that the newly unveiled 2026 work plan is a comprehensive framework for synergy, collaboration and partnership, aimed at advancing sustainable peace, environmental justice and socio-economic development in Nigeria and across Africa.
According to him, the document outlines CEPEJ’s programmes, activities and strategic interventions for the year 2026, with focus on promoting peacebuilding, environmental protection, educational support, climate resilience and economic empowerment through structured advocacy, capacity building, policy engagement and grassroots action.
He noted that the work plan will cover both urban and rural communities across the Niger Delta, with targeted engagement involving community structures, local government councils, women groups, sports and educational institutions, security agencies, civil society organisations, youth networks, traditional and religious institutions, as well as relevant government ministries, departments and agencies.
Mulade further disclosed that key components of the plan include a Sports Development Programme such as the Catch Them Young U-15 Football Tournament, aimed at discovering young talents and providing them opportunities for exposure and career development.
Other programmes listed include quiz and essay competitions for riverine and rural secondary school students in Delta State to promote academic excellence, as well as youth and women empowerment initiatives through skills acquisition and vocational training to enhance self-reliance and economic productivity.
He expressed optimism that effective implementation of the 2026 work plan would significantly contribute to sustainable peace, environmental resilience and community development in Nigeria.
“The specific objectives include strengthening peacebuilding mechanisms and conflict prevention at community, local and state levels; promoting environmental protection and climate change awareness; enhancing community participation in governance and accountability; building the capacity of youths, women and community leaders as agents of positive change; and strengthening institutional coordination and partnerships for effective programme delivery,” Mulade stated.
