64 Independence: Group calls for accountability, restructuring

A Group under the auspices of ‘The Rebirth Group has called for urgent Restructuring and Accountability in Nigeria as the country marks 110 years of Amalgamation and 64 years of independence.

In a statement issued and signed by Convener of the Group, Owolabi Oladejo, Chairman Board of Trustees, Yemi Farounbi, and General secretary, DIY Nweze the Group pointed out that the 64th independence Anniversary of Nigeria provides the opportunity for all to come together and chart a new path for peace, progress and come up with a solution towards addressing the social, political & Economic challenges facing the Nation.

” We believe it is time for sober reflection. We must come together to chart a new path for peace and progress. Nigeria should no longer fear open debates, negotiations and decisions about the kind of relationship they want with other ethnic and how their country should be Governed. It is high time we put a stop to living together in mutual suspicion and hatred.

We must embrace a new political order to navigate the existential threats facing our Nation.”

 The Group said

The recent Nationwide protests tagged: EndbadGovernance/ Hunger protest according to the group is a demonstration of the frustration and agitation of the citizens of Nigeria with a request for a new leadership structure and respect for the principles of  accountability and transparency in Governance.

” The peaceful calls for better Governance and Economic Stability reflected deep-seated concerns about pervasive profligacy, corruption, mismanagement, Hunger, widespread poverty and the failure to address the welfare of the citizens”

The Group however condemned the hijack of the EndbadGovernance protests by hoodlums, the violence and calls for military takeover in some parts of the country which marred the collective struggle to garner international support for positive reforms in the country.

” The military regime led to prolonged period of repression, human rights abuses and Economic decline the effect of which are still felt today. This is not the time to toy with our nascent  Democracy or the future of our Dear country” , it said

It also advocates a return of  the country to regional autonomous structure and called on the federal Government to convene conferences for discussions on a preferred system of Government for the country .
