ActionAid urges transparency in cash transfer scheme
ActionAid Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that the Conditional Cash Transfer programme truly gets to the most vulnerable in the society.
While noting that the initiative is a positive step, the organisation underlined the need for a broader scope in its implementation, by ensuring that the right persons are identified and captured.
The group, in a statement by its Communication Coordinator, Oluwakemi Akinremi-Segun, stated that a meticulous and transparent selection process was crucial to avoid exclusion or misallocation of resources.
It urged extension of the scheme beyond the initial three months, asserting that sustainable poverty eradication requires continuous support and intervention to foster a more stable foundation for long-term economic empowerment.
In tandem with the programme, the organisation implored the government to explore options for sustainable livelihoods for beneficiary families, which may encompass skill-building, vocational training and access to markets for small-scale entrepreneurs to promote economic independence and resilience.
Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, while applauding the Renewed Hope Business Grants and Loans for Vulnerable Market Women, Farmers, and Traders (GEEP), noted that supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is key for economic growth and job creation. He said expanding access to financial resources, technical assistance and market linkages would amplify the impact of the programme.
