NGO Targets 10,000 Niger Delta Youths For Training, Empowerment
A Non Governmental Organization, (NGO) Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Heart Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has earmarked 10,000 youths in Delta, Rivers, Edo and Bayelsa states to be empowered through field monitoring and skills acquisition reportage.
The NGO which made this known during a training/empowerment programme held in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area Weekend, revealed that over 5000 youths have so far benefitted from their programme in the stated states.
Speaking during the programme, Grant Manager, ERA/FoEN, Mr. Eghosa Ogbebor, said the programme is focused on environmental degradation, field monitoring and reporting skills acquisition.
Ogbebor noted that the programme has three layers, school education, youth entrepreneurship and youth organizer and its implementation started in 2018 and will end in 2022.
According to him, the target is to train ten thousand youths but so far, they have trained over 5000 youths whom have been empowered with some packages and they will in turn train others from what they have learn.
He explained that the project is being funded by a Norwegian organization called Naturvernforbundent with support from Operation Days Work(ODW). The funding was raised by youths in Norway who felt that activities of oil companies have actually devastated the world environment and they felt that there was need for the youths to be sensitized and also be advocate of good and conducive environment.
“ERA/FoEN was incorporated into the programme when it went for a competition and was selected among the over 500 persons that applied for it. The school project is to create awareness and sensitization and to set up school clubs which ERA/FoEN did.
“We have trained over 60 youths on the school education programme in Edo, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states and also we are trying to create environmental manual, and also have some components in the curriculum. In view of that, we are working with the ministries of education and environment to ensure that the outcome of what is in the manual is added to the school curriculum.
“On the youth entrepreneurship, in this we want to build the entrepreneur skill of our younger ones. On the youth organizing, we want them to be familiar with environmental laws, speak with one voice and among others”, he added.
Comrade Efegbare Okeoghene, representatives of ERA/FoEN in Delta State and the speakers, Mr. Azakaza Onajite and Mrs. Elo Agofure, who spoke in same vein, said the training created opportunity for the youths in the project communities as well as members of young friends of the earth to learn theoretical fact on global environment.
They added that the youths were taken for practical site seeing where they were told by people they interacted with that the oil spill sites seen were as a result of human activities which took place in the communities, and affected their means of livelihood.
