Condolence: Renowned N'Delta Journalist, Opukeme Loses Mother The Nigerian journalism community, especially the Ijaw Publishers' Forum is grieving the loss of Mrs. Goodluck Opukeme, mother of an esteemed journalist and publisher of Daily Watch, Mr. Cletus Opukeme.  Mrs. Opukeme passed away on Friday, September 20, after a brief illness at a private hospital in Sagbama, Bayelsa State. Born on February 15, 1951, in Tuomo town, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Mrs. Opukeme was a pillar of strength to her family and community. Nigerians now experiencing life-threatening hardship says Rights Group   A human rights group, Organization  for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian (OHPRPH) has raised the alarm that "Nigerians are currently experiencing life threatening hardship", following the total removal of fuel subsidy by the present administration.  According to the group, "if urgent measures are not put in place, it might lead to something uncontrolable". ECN moves to free up more electricity with energy efficiency Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has planned to free up more electricity into the national grid with energy efficiency. Nigeria Sees Surge in Rail Passenger Traffic and Revenue The rail transportation system in Nigeria is gaining popularity, with revenues reaching ₦1.69 billion in the second quarter of 2024, marking a 53.14% increase from the ₦1.10 billion reported in the same period of 2023 according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its recent report. The report indicates that 689,263 passengers travelled by rail in Q2, showing a growth rate of 45.38% compared to 474,117 passengers in the corresponding quarter of 2023. The volume of goods transported by rail also experienced a significant increase, with 143,759 tons moved in Q2 2024, up from 56,936 tons in Q2 2023. Additionally, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) reported that 5,940 tons of goods were transported through pipelines in Q2 2024, an increase from the 2,856 tons recorded in the same period of the previous year. FG Increases Feeding Allowance Of Inmates By 50% The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), on Thursday, confirmed that the federal government has raised the feeding allowance for inmates by 50%. The increase becomes effective from August 2024. The spokesperson of the NCS,  Abubakar Umar , confirmed the development in an interview with Punch, adding that the approval is part of efforts to address rising food costs and improve inmate welfare.
